There are few places in the world that test both anglers and equipment quite like the waters of Southeast Alaska. Between changing weather, long runs offshore, strong tides, and nonstop fishing action, every detail matters, especially the boat.
For Screamin’ Reels Lodge in Craig, Alaska, providing a world-class fishing experience starts with having boats their captains and guests can trust every single day. That’s why their operation is built around North River Offshore boats.
From custom layouts and all-weather comfort to fishability and durability, North River boats have become a major part of the experience guests remember long after they leave Alaska.
Building a Family-Driven Alaska Fishing Experience
Screamin’ Reels Lodge was founded by Derek and Sue Anderson in 2018 with a vision of creating something more personal than the typical lodge experience.
“We had a great opportunity to take a two-bedroom, two-bathroom house and remodel it into a wonderful five-bedroom, four-bathroom house,” Sue Anderson explained. “And now we have also added a cabin for our third boat.”
What started as a small operation quickly evolved into a destination lodge known for its hospitality, fishing opportunities, and personalized guest experience.
“We have wonderful amenities for all of our guests,” Sue said. “When you come and visit us at Screamin’ Reels Lodge, we really try to provide a real family feel.”
That atmosphere is something the entire team takes seriously.
“All of our employees here really feel like they are family,” Sue added. “And when you stay with us, we want to treat you like you are family. We get to know you. We want to spend time with you. We want to have a beer, a glass of wine with you, so you have a nice, fun, relaxing vacation and take some fish home at the end.”
In Alaska, where guests often travel thousands of miles for a once-in-a-lifetime trip, those details matter. Screamin’ Reels Lodge has built its reputation around making guests feel comfortable both on and off the water.

Why Screamin’ Reels Lodge Runs North River Offshore Boats
When you’re running fishing charters in Alaska, your boats need to handle more than just calm weather and easy conditions. They need to provide safety, reliability, fishability, and comfort every single day.
That’s why the lodge runs a fleet of custom North River Offshore boats ranging from 30 to 32 feet.
“We are very lucky,” Sue said. “We have three wonderful North River boats from 30 to 32 feet. We’ve had just a fantastic relationship with North River. We’ve had the opportunity to build two custom boats with them, and every detail has been meticulously put together between our lodge and North River.”
The North River Seahawk Offshore is designed specifically for demanding offshore environments. Built with heavy-duty aluminum construction, large fishing decks, all-weather protection, and full walkaround access, the Offshore gives both captains and anglers room to fish comfortably without sacrificing performance.
“These boats are just wonderful fishing machines,” Sue explained. “You can fish from the forward, you can fish from the middle, you can fish from the back.”
That level of fishability becomes especially important during fast-paced salmon action where anglers are constantly moving around the boat.
A New Generation of Alaska Captains
One of the most unique parts of Screamin’ Reels Lodge is that it truly is a family operation. Fishing has been passed down through generations, and today that passion continues through Sue and Derek’s daughter, Natalie.
“My dad is definitely my biggest mentor since I grew up around him every day fishing since basically I could walk,” Natalie said. “My love of fishing started on the back deck.”
Like many kids raised around boats, Natalie wanted to be involved from the very beginning.
“I started deck-handing when I was seven, begging him to let me go out every day,” she said. “And now I’m here at 18, captaining and following his lead.”
Today, Natalie captains one of the lodge’s North River Offshore boats, the “Thunderstruck”, something Sue says has been incredibly rewarding to watch as a parent.
“We have been so fortunate to have a daughter who has been so interested in fishing from a time when she could hardly walk,” Sue said. “To see her now running a boat, taking full charge, it’s really rewarding as a parent to see a child that has blossomed and has really taken such a passion for fishing and for Alaska.”

Built for Serious Fishing
For captains who spend countless hours on the water each season, the boat’s design makes a major difference.
Natalie says one of the biggest advantages of captaining a North River Offshore is the flexibility and fishability the layout provides.
“I love captaining a North River, just due to the flexibility,” Natalie explained. “Especially if you’re on a hot coho, having the flexibility to walk all the way around the boat. It’s just something different that most boats don’t have.”
That walkaround design allows guides and anglers to move freely while fighting fish, resetting gear, and managing multiple hookups during busy fishing days.
The Offshore lineup is also built to provide comfort during long runs and unpredictable weather conditions common throughout Southeast Alaska.
“I think life is better in a North River since you just have the flexibility and the comfort,” Natalie said. “No matter what day it is, if it’s bright and sunny, stormy, no matter what, you know that your life’s still going to be good and that you’re going to have the full comfort and safety in the North River.”
The Complete Alaska Lodge Experience
At Screamin’ Reels Lodge, the experience goes far beyond simply catching fish.
Guests are taken care of from the moment they wake up in the morning until the end of the day when they return to the lodge with coolers full of fish and stories from the water.
“A day in the life of the customer is waking up at the beautiful lodge and having everything accommodated to you,” Natalie explained. “Getting your bait hooked, all of your meals cooked, everything tailored to your needs.”
That attention to detail, paired with experienced captains and dependable equipment, has helped Screamin’ Reels Lodge become one of the premier fishing destinations in Alaska.
